New York Times project (Helsinki Performance)Pia Lindman, 2005 Pia Lindman's project New York Times involved a collecting and tracing of one year (2002-03) of press images representing mourning and grief. The images ranged from mourners in the aftermath of the World Trade Center, terrorist attacks in Israel, funerals of Palestinians, Chechnyans being attacked by Russians or vice versa, to African American teenagers killed by police. Eliciting the bodily gestures out of the news context Lindman made drawings/diagrams of these gestures by tracing them with pencil on vellum. The gestures were then re-enacted by the artist in front of video camera, and brought back to public space as performances. The work presented here is a documentation of the New York Times Helsinki performance in 2005, where the re-enactments were performed in front of the city's monuments. http://web.mit.edu/pialindman/ |
