The Kallio archive is a hyperlocal, open media archive on the Kallio district in Eastern Central Helsinki.
The archive consists of video clips depicting the life and environment of an urban neighbourhood undergoing rapid change. Its Drupal-based web platform will offer rich layers of metadata on the materials and all of the contents are made available under Creative Commons licenses to enable use and remix of the materials in various contexts.
The project kicked off in an open doors event during the Kallio Kukkii local cultural festival in May 2011.
The initial collection and development process spans 12 months and 4 seasons, and the web archive will open in 2012.

The first video productions of the Kallio Archive, realized in the Videocollaboratory workshop, are now published at M2HZ and Stadi.TV.
They present 4 different approaches for working with a shared location and materials - a graphic motion study, an animated story, a bar-hopping experiment with first-person camera, and a symphonic composition of nightly visions.

The videocollaboratory workshop kicked off during a first sprint weekend on 4-5.11. In the workshop, artists and documentarists create new work based on the Kallio Archive video resource - and add futher footage to the collections.
In the first sessions, we formed 3 teams which went hunting for the "soul" of Kallio by looking at the rhythms, nights, and street art of the district. The work continues on a second sprint in 18-19.11 and the results will be presented fresh from the workshop - in a sneak premiere at the Kallio Kipinöi festival on Saturday 19th.
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: VIDEOCOLLABORATORY WORKSHOP
We invite artists, VJs and experimental film/videomakers to a workshop to explore the potentials of a collaborative production process based on open video resources.
The workshop is organized in context of the Kallio project initiated by m-cult to produce an open video archive and participatory application on the life and environment of the Kallio district in Helsinki. The materials of the workshop are based on the first collection of clips from the Kallio archive, which workshop participants can add to in further shootings. In the workshop, participant teams will realize experimental productions which will be presented on the M2HZ and Stadi.TV channels.
The experimental process focuses on the following questions:
*open content in producing documentary or audiovisually inventive work
*the use of metadata and locative practices in video production
*the logics of remix and collaborative production
The workshop process involves two sprints, the first of which takes place on Friday, November 4 (16-20) and Saturday, November 5 (11-18). The second sprint is scheduled for November 18, date to be fixed by participants.
The ideal group size of the workshop is 8 participants. Participants will receive an artist fee on the published productions.

Footage collection in the Kallio project is underway and our videographers can be seen on their urban expeditions around the neighbourhood - shooting street views, signs, textures, traffic and other Autumn phenomena in the Kallio district.
The metadata model for content description is developed in weekly review meetings, in preparation of the first version of the Kallio web archive in October.
m-cult was awarded a product development grant to realize ambient_kallio, a hyperlocal, participatory media application. The project builds on the materials of the Kallio archive and the collaborative production experiments within the video_collaboratory workshop series.
The award was granted by Dimeke, ESF project focusing on scriptwriting and narration in digital and audiovisual media coordinated by Oulu University. Altogether 5 projects were awarded in the product development competition focusing on media arts, urban narratives and the city as stage.
As part of Kallio Kukkii, the local cultural festival of the Kallio neighbourhood in Eastern Helsinki, m-cult hosted a workshop on May 19, kicking off a project to create an open media archive on the neighbourhood.
The hyperlocal media archive will contain video clips documenting the life of an urban area currently undergoing rapid changes. All materials will be made available via Creative Commons licences to enable free use and remix of the footage.
