m-cult supports competence development in new media production by creating
opportunities for international mobility, co-productions and creative technology
R&D. The aim is to accelerate professional exchanges across disciplines and borders
through residencies, workshops, master classes and co-production.
In 2005, m-cult realized a survey and plan for international residency exchange in
new media arts and research. The aim is to create a series of international residencies
in collaboration with residency organisations from 2007 on.
m-cult has collaborated with Sagas Writing interactive fiction in organising creative labs
on concept development for mobile and pervasive media in Oulu, Northern Finland. The lab?s
were mentored by Frank Boyd and Craig Lindley and gathered game designers, artists and
researchers to create concepts for mobile multi-user content. The first lab was realised
in the context of m-cult and POEM?s collaboration for cross-media development in 2004.

In 2001-02, m-cult planned and coordinated the interactionmasters master class for UIAH
Center of Expertise for New Media. During the master class workshops, a group of Finnish
media designers developed their projects under the guidance of international mentors such
as Casey Reas, Murielle Lefebre & Jean-Jacques Birgé, Joshua Davis, Pierre Lavoie, Bill
Gaver and Nathan Shedroff.

On September 6, 2005 m-cult hosted a workshop on cultural/civic streaming and television activities,
with participants from 40 organisations and groups. The workshop kicked off the development of the
M2HZ television project.
The planning of the Helsinki Troll project evolved through two creative
workshops (April 22-26 and May 25-30, 2005) during which the Troll series
of events was developed in interdisciplinary collaboration.
The OS TV research project for civic participation in digital television organised a
seminar (YLE, 27.1.2005) and two development workshops - DTV for senior citizens,
(National Consumer research centre 10.2.) and Concept development within an expert
group of participants (HIIT, 16.2. 2005.)
Co-organised with Nordic Film and Media Centre POEM and Sagas Writing Interactive
Fiction (DE) and with Frank Boyd (UK) as mentor, the Creative lab gathered game
designers, artists and researchers to create concepts for mobile multi-user content.
The workshop was realised as part of m-cult and POEM.s X-IS framework for cross-media
development.
Creative Crossings workshop was organised by m-cult, BANFF and Arts Council of England and
hosted by The Finnish Institute in London on April 26-27, 2004. Attended by over 30 Finnish,
British and Canadian practitioners working with wireless, location-based and participatory
media, the workshop developed agendas for an international research and production consortium.
Searching for an urban media space workshop, held on October 18-19th 2002 with architects,
designers and urban researchers, created three alternative concepts for the m-cult centre
in Helsinki.
Nordic media culture - actors and practices seminar and workshop launched the Nordic
research project at Hanasaari Cultural Centre on June 7-8th, 2002.
Workshop on online archives and metadata was organized with V2_lab, Rotterdam at
Media centre LUME on January 13-14th, 2002.
